Rievaulx (Helmsley)

“Rivalx in the parish of Helmsley, is a township of scattered houses, in the deep, narrow and woody valley of the Rye, 2-5 miles northwest of Helmsley, containing 225 inhabitants and 3,073 acres of land belonging to Lord Feversham and celebrated for the magnificent ruins of its Abbey.” William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire, 1840.
