“Asenby in the parish of Topcliffe, a pleasant village on the south-western acclivities of Swaledale, 5.5 miles southwest of Thirsk, has in its township 238 souls and 1,131 acres of land, mostly the property of Colonel Wyndham, the lord of the manor.” William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire, 1840.
