“Dishforth in the parish of Topcliffe, a pleasant village and township, on the Thirsk road, 4 miles north of Boroughbridge, contains 209 souls and 940 acres of land, mostly owned by Earl de Grey, though Colonel Wyndham is lord of the manor.” William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire, 1840.
