“Ilton with Pott in the parish of Masham, the former a straggling village, 3 miles southwest, and the latter a moorland district of scattered houses from 4 to 6 miles southwest of Masham, constitute a township of 233 souls and 2,048 acres of land, partly owned by O V Harcourt Esq, the lord of the manor.” William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire, 1840.
