“Kirby on the Moor, commonly called Kirby Hill, is a pleasant village 1 mile north of Boroughbridge, and has in its township 189 souls and 790 acres of land, mostly the property of Sir W R A Wellesley Pole, lord of the manor.” William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire, 1840.
