Swainby and Whorlton

“Whorlton consists of a few scattered farm houses and cottages, 6 miles southwest of Stokesley, but its township contains the large village of Swainby, comprising together 585 souls and 6,700 acres, mostly owned by the Marquis of Ailesbury, the lord of the manor.” William White’s History, Gazetteer and Directory of the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire, 1840.
